Tunisia vs Namibia AFCON 2023 Match Lineup: Starting XI and Substitutes
Tunisia is set to begin their African Cup of Nations journey against Namibia on Tuesday evening. This will be the first time the two teams meet in the AFCON tournament, although they played a friendly match in November 2007, which Tunisia won 2-0 at home.
This marks Tunisia's 21st participation in the tournament, and it's their 16th consecutive appearance. They won the AFCON title in 2004 as hosts but have struggled to go beyond the quarter-finals since then, with their best performance being in 2019 when they reached the semi-finals.
In their last four AFCON opening matches, Tunisia has drawn two and lost two. The last time they won their first game was in 2013 against Algeria (1-0). During the qualifiers for AFCON 2023, Tunisia only conceded one goal in six games, the fewest among all participating teams.
On the other hand, Namibia is making its fourth appearance in the tournament and the first since 2019. They have struggled in previous tournaments, finishing at the bottom of their group each time. Namibia has lost seven out of nine AFCON matches, with only two draws. Their defense has been a challenge, conceding an average of 2.7 goals per game.
Youssef Msakni from Tunisia is eyeing an AFCON record. If he scores, it will be his sixth CAF Africa Cup of Nations tournament record, which currently is held by four players, including André Ayew. He had an impressive goal-scoring ratio during the qualifiers.
For Namibia, Peter Shalulile scored four of their six goals in the group stage of the qualifiers. He is one of the few players, alongside Victor Osimhen and Patson Daka, to score in four different matches.
Here are the starting lineups for both teams:
